Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a simple and safe procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and ridding the skin of fine vellus (peach fuzz) hair that is usually found around the sides of the face, chin, top lip, top of cheeks and around the forehead. It also removes dead skin cells which dull the complexion. It has been used for many years and has recently become the latest must have celebrity treatment.

When clients hear the word “Dermaplaning” they quickly associate it with a treatment called “Dermabrasion/Microdermabrasion” where the skin is abraded down to the dermis using a whisk like device and vacuum but this is too abrasive on the skin and can cause complications and infections and which is why it is not commonly used anymore. DERMAPLANING on the other hand is a simple exfoliation of the epidermis and is a quick painless procedure. Using a medical grade sterile tool the technician gently stretches and abrades the surface of the skin with light feather-like strokes. It really is an amazing treatment.

Dermaplaning is safe for pregnant and breast feeding mums and is completely organic and vegan. It is also first choice for those with excess fluffy/fuzzy hair on the skin. By getting rid of the hair it allows skin products to absorb deeper into the skin and when makeup such as foundation or powder is applied to face it will give a much smoother, sleeker finish rather than making the hair more obvious and visible. Dermaplaning gets rid of dead skin cells and the build up of dirt and oils that get trapped in the hair follicles so it leaves the skin thoroughly clean and glowing. Hair does not grow back any thicker, this is a myth ~ it physiologically cannot because it’s only vellus hair not terminal hair (the normal hair found on the face and body).

Dermaplaning is suitable for those with rough dry skin, mild acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles and of course excess facial hair. The treatment gives a smooth refined glow which leaves skin as smooth as a baby’s bottom! I love it!

The treatment lasts approximately 45 minutes and involves a double cleanse, dermaplane exfoliation, face mask, serum, a special massage for lymph drainage and soothing SPF serum to finish. It’s heavenly and your face will look and feel amazing.

Here are some frequently asked questions:

Q: Is Dermaplaning painful?
A: No, not at all. A special sterile surgical scalpel held at a 45 degree angle is moved superficially along the surface of the skin to smooth, exfoliate, remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz hair.

Q: Will the hair grow back thicker and stronger?
A: No, it physically can’t. It is not terminal hair (normal body hair) therefore it is unable to.

Q: Who can perform Dermaplaning?
A: Only a beauty therapist (level 3), semi permanent makeup artist, doctor or dentist can perform the Dermaplaning treatment.

Q: What areas can be treated?
A: The treatment is for the face only.

Q: How often should I have a Dermaplane treatment?
A: It is recommended you have a Dermaplane facial 4-6 weeks which allows time for cell turnover and vellus hair growth. This allows the technician to remove about 3 weeks worth of dead skin cells which naturally build up and dull the skin.

Q: Can Dermaplaning be performed with a chemical peel?
A: Yes. Dermaplaning is generally beneficial before a chemical peel as it enhances the absorption of products.

Q: Who can have Dermaplaning?
A: All skin types can benefit from Dermaplaning even men can be treated over non-bearded skin. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mums, vegans, those with mild acne scarring, people with fine lines and wrinkles and for those ladies who are conscious of facial hair and want a smooth more youthful glow and softer skin.
